This Read Me file contains the latest Backup Toolkit information available at the time the installation disc was mastered. See our web site for more up-to-date information (http://www.fwb.com).
• There are now two separate Backup Toolkit applications--one for Mac OS 8-9 and one for Mac OS X. The Mac OS X version is completely native.
• Completely rewritten manual.
• A Check for New Version feature allows you to verify whether you have the latest version of Backup Toolkit.
• Live icon with progress bar in Mac OS X's Dock.
• New server window displays the last servers used by Backup Toolkit. Servers can be automatically mounted if necessary or or mounted manually with a simple double-click.
• Fixed a multiple-volume backup error in which when compression was active, the last file of the backup could not be copied.

• Under OS X, a user can activate Administrator mode with an Administrator password to grant Backup Toolkit all permissions, without the need to login as root.

• The comparison function (with the verify content option on) now only considers files with different contents (files with identical content, but with different dates are displayed as identical files) as "different files".
• Uid and gid (owners and groups) are saved within compressed files, and can be restored correctly, even if files are stored in devices that do not preserve the owner and group, or from Mac OS 9 (this method only works for files when the compression is enabled).
• Cmd-H shortcut is now reserved for the "Hide..." function under Mac OS X. Immediate Copy no longer uses it.

• Under Mac OS X, Backup Toolkit no longer copies "socket" files (pseudo-files that cannot be copied which result in errors).
• Fixed a bug that could freeze copies using AppleShare IP.

Notes:
Settings (preferences, actions, etc.) can now be placed in two locations:
• In the application folder (same as with previous versions).
• In the Preferences folder (under Mac OS 9) or in the user's /Library/Preferences/ folder (under Mac OS X). This is the defaut location.
Backup Toolkit first searches in the application folder. If nothing is found, it will search for the settings in the Preferences folder.
If there are no previous settings files, Tri-BACKUP saves them in the Preferences folder. Under Mac OS X, each user can have his or her own settings in the /Library/Preferences/ folder.

• New one way programmed synchronization: an option allows to synchronize only from the left folder (the reference) to the right folder (the slave copy).
• Create files on the desktop to perform programmed actions with just a double-click.
• Immediate backup is now done directly in the destination folder/disk, without creating a subfolder with the same name. If a subfolder with the same name as the original folder already exists, backup is done in this subfolder (like in previous version). If there is no such subfolder, backup is done at the first level of the destination folder/disk. This allows, for example, to maintain a copy of a disk content in another disk, and to restore if needed. Immediate restore function no more needs identical folder names for the source and the destination.
• Option (in Settings) to quit when all daily actions are done.
• Files date is displayed with seconds in immediate actions.
• Empty folders are copied and updated when running programmed Synchronization, Mirror and Evolutive Backup (in previous version, empty folders were not copied).
• "_" character replaces the slash ("/") and point (".") in name created from the date (incremental and evolutive backup, etc.). This avoid possible side effects when the backup is done to servers running a non-Macintosh system.
• Solved date issue (when date has odd seconds) with certain network volumes that saves date with a 2 seconds resolution (for example, DOS filesystem always save date with even seconds).
• Fixed a cosmetic bug with the scroll bar in the exception panel.

• Comparison function now allows two modes: quick comparison for checking name, date and size of files, and full comparison to check any difference in the files content.
• New options in Settings: optionally displays the splash screen and the name of invisible files when a programmed action is in progress.

Owners of earlier versions of Backup Toolkit
If you own an earlier version of Backup Toolkit, and want to continue using the previous settings and configurations, install Backup Toolkit 3 then copy the files «Backup Toolkit.Exclusions» and «Backup Toolkit.Configurations» into the «Backup Toolkit 3 Folder».
If you have already ran Backup Toolkit 3 and created new configurations, the old ones will not be imported. To import old settings, remove all the programmed actions first, quit and re-run.
